Art at Sea

During 2018 I was lucky enough to be an art instructor on three cruises: Magellan to the Canaries and Madeira in March, Marco Polo to Iceland and Greenland in August; Astoria to Norway for the Northern Lights in October. I love being in warm sunny climes but I have completely fallen for the Arctic. I think Greenland was the highlight - amazing scenery and very paintable!

This coming March (17th March to 1st April) I’m returning to the Arctic, heading for northern Norway in search of the Northern Lights aboard Marco Polo - Again, a truly wonderful part of the world. When I was there in the autumn the colours were stunning. Ground hugging plants in very shade of red, purple, orange, pink, gold covering the mountainsides making them glow. Bad weather meant we had to cancel a visit to one port, Andalnes, but the bonus was we took the inner passage between the coast and little islands – one moment sailing between towering snow topped mountains, next passing islands with small farms. So much to paint, whatever the weather I was out on deck with my sketchbook.
